U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz had a strong message to “establishment” leaders in both parties after Wednesday’s Senate vote on the debt ceiling saw 12 Republican senators break ranks and vote with Democrats to avoid a filibuster.

Come November, he warned, the American people will remember that “establishment politicians from both parties are simply not listening to the American people.”

“Today’s vote is yet another example that establishment politicians from both parties are simply not listening to the American people,” Cruz said in a statement issued after the vote. “Outside the beltway, Americans of all political stripes understand that we cannot keep spending money we don’t have.”

According to CNN:

Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, a leader of the GOP tea party wing, mounted a filibuster attempt to force a 60-vote threshold for proceeding on the debt ceiling measure.

However, a dozen Republicans, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, joined Democrats to overcome the filibuster on a 67-31 procedural vote that avoided another politically damaging legislative impasse over spending.

The Democratic-controlled Senate then gave final approval by a 55-43 margin on strict party lines, with McConnell and the other Republicans who helped overcome the filibuster voting against the measure to reduce their political risk.

The Senate vote followed Tuesday’s House vote on the measure that left conservatives, particularly tea party conservatives like Cruz, frustrated.

“Some members of Congress care so much about being praised by the Washington media that they’re willing to mortgage our children’s future,” Cruz said. “They pretend we don’t have a problem and can just kick the can down the road.

“Let’s be clear about the motive behind this vote — there are too many members of Congress who think they can fool people and they will forget about it the next week. But sometimes, come November, the people remember.”
