President Obama’s Super Bowl Sunday interview with Fox News host Bill O’Reilly may win him a second consecutive PolitiFact “Lie of the Year,” an Idaho congressman suggested Wednesday.
GOP Rep. Raul Labrador was referring the president’s assertion that the IRS targeting scandal amounted to nothing more than “some boneheaded decisions” made by a few Cincinnati agents with “not even a smidgen of corruption,” according to The Daily Caller.
“I find it fascinating that this administration says there’s no smidgen of corruption, which I think will be the lie of this year,” Labrador said during a gathering with conservative lawmakers.
The scandal involved the prolonged delays of tax-exempt status applications submitted by conservative groups — often put off for years. When the story broke last year, the president promised to get to the bottom of it. Since then, it’s been placed in the pigeon-hole of “phony scandals,” where it’s remained.
Labrador said the media has given New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie a much harder time for the George Washington Bridge lane closure scandal.
“They’re both allegations of political payback. One seems to go straight to the top of the [Christie] administration, and that’s because it’s an investigation of a Republican,” he said. “And something that is clearly just as bad, or even worse, they’re not even getting to the bottom of it.”
Obama was awarded the “Lie of the Year” in 2013 for his oft-repeated promise that Americans could keep their preferred health care plan. But what about 2014?

The president can’t state with any measure of confidence that there was no corruption involved in the IRS scandal when the investigation is still ongoing.
What began as the act of a few rogue Cincinnati IRS agents has since spread to Washington, D.C.
Lois Lerner, the agent at the center of the targeting scheme, chose to hide behind her Fifth Amendment rights against self-incrimination rather than submit to the House Oversight Committee’s cross-examination.
The ongoing investigation is headed by a Department of Justice lawyer who gave sizable donations to both of Obama’s presidential campaigns.
It could be that the president was speaking the truth, though. It could be that there was not a smidgen of corruption involved — it could have been more like a ton.
I’m not sure how many smidgens there are in a ton, but I’m positive it’s a lot.
