The disastrous rollout of Obamacare’s Healthcare.gov website could be even worse than it looks.
U.S. intelligence agencies suspect the website could be vulnerable to malicious software written by software developers working for the government of Belarus that could be used to compromise the healthcare information of millions of Americans and make the site easy prey for cyber attacks, according to the Washington Free Beacon.
“The U.S. Affordable Care Act software was written in part in Belarus by software developers under state control, and that makes the software a potential target for cyber attacks,” an official told the Beacon.
Belarus, a former Soviet Republic that’s now a dictatorship closely allied with Russia, already has a record of criminal Internet behavior. Last year, its state-controlled networks were involved in data “hijacking” that rerouted Internet traffic from the U.S. to Belarus, according to the Beacon.

Administration officials contacted by the Beacon downplayed the risk potential, saying a review by the Department of Health and Human Services had found no Belarusian involvement in Obamacare software.
However, in an interview last summer, a top Belarusian technology official bragged to a Russian radio interviewer that “we are helping Obama complete his insurance reform,” according to the Beacon.
“Our programmers wrote the program that appears on the monitors in all hospitals and all insurance companies — they will see the full profile of the given patient,” the official told the Voice of Russia Radio.
Rep. Mike Rogers, the Michigan Republican who chairs the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, said news of the foreign involvement in Obamacare software development came as a surprise. He said Obama administration officials have told Congress all software work on the network had been done in the U.S., according to the Beacon.
“We need an independent, thorough security evaluation of this site, and we need the commitment from the administration that the findings will be acknowledged and promptly addressed,” Rogers said.
