Laura Bush says future first gentlemen should ‘stand back and be quiet’

Former first lady Laura Bush doesn’t believe presidents’ wives should be paid for their duties while their husbands serve as president.

“I don’t think so,” Bush said when asked about the prospect in an interview promoting C-SPAN’s series “First Ladies.” “There are plenty of perks, believe me.”

After lamenting about how much she missed the White House chef, the ever-graceful Bush came back with a question of her own: “I think the interesting question is not should they receive a salary, but should they be able to work for a salary at a job they may have already had?”

In fact, Bush added, the husbands of future female presidents would likely keep their careers once the roles are inevitably reversed.

Her advice to future first gentlemen: “Stand back and be quiet.”

Bonus: “I am a desperate housewife” speech
