CNN’s Crowley grills WH adviser on Obama’s paralyzing poll numbers, lone wolf ‘threat’

With 2014 a “year of action,” President Obama plans to get things done with or without Congress, White House senior adviser Dan Pfeiffer reiterated Sunday.

“Let me start out with the new ABC/Washington Post poll which found the president’s approval rating at 46 percent,” CNN’s Candy Crowley said to Pfeiffer, her guest on Sunday’s “State of the Union.” “Half the country disapproved of how the president is handling his job. CN N had a poll of polls taken before this one which was lower at about 43 percent. What does he – it seems to me that’s the first thing he needs to do is change the public’s opinion before he can move forward on anything.”

The public was frustrated at the end of 2013, Pfeiffer responded, naming the shutdown, a near-default and Obamacare’s disastrous rollout as the causes. The president is “looking for ways to work with Congress where he can, but act on his own where he can,” he said.

Crowley pressed for more details citing a stalled presidential agenda.

“With numbers like that, how can he have any more success this year than he had last year?” she asked. “I want to show you some of the proposals that were in the president’s 2013 speech last year that have gone nowhere — increasing the minimum wage, expanding access to preschool, immigration reform, gun-control legislation. None of that has happened because the year took control of the agenda.”

Obama will continue pushing for those priorities, Pfeiffer said.

“You’re going to hear new things,” he said. “But [what] you’re also going to hear from him, is this is supposed to be a year of action. So, he is going to look in every way he can with his pen and his phone to try to move the ball forward.”

In summing up Pfeiffer’s assertion, Crowley said,“And there’s always that sort of – it’s kind of a threat – ‘Hey, Congress, work with me, or I can do a lot of stuff administratively.’”
