Former GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney took part in a rare interview Friday with NBC News, and said Russian President Vladimir Putin has “outperformed” President Barack Obama “time and time again on the world stage.”
The interview covered a number of topics, including a question on how the president “has handled the situation in Russia, his interactions directly with Vladimir Putin?” The Daily Caller reported.
“Well, I think Putin has outperformed our president time and time again on the world stage,” Romney said. “We are, I said this before, geopolitical adversaries — not enemies, but adversaries geopolitical — and Putin lines up with [Syrian President] Assad, and gave Assad the cover that he needed and won a diplomatic battle with regards to Syria.”
Romney was speaking of the Russian measure that Obama agreed to that was aimed at ridding Syria of its chemical weapons arsenal by 2014. A deal that saw little follow through and gets no attention today.
“He likewise keeps Edward Snowden as a bit of a stick in the eye at America,” Romney added. “And I think most observers of the international political scene suggest that Russia has elevated itself in stature and America has been diminished.”
The harsh criticism of Obama’s handling of foreign policy comes at a time when his approval rating is in the tank over the disastrous roll-out of Obamacare and a majority of Americans view the White House as incompetent, according to new polling from Quinnipiac.
