Florida’s unemployment rate continued its 38-month decline in December, dropping to 6.2 percent, the governor’s office announced Friday.
Gov. Rick Scott, who has made job creation his overriding goal since 2010, called the news evidence “that our economic policies are working.”
Scott’s goal from the outset of his term was 700,000 jobs created in seven years. As of December, there have been 462,100 new private-sector jobs created since December 2010, according to a news release from Scott’s office.
In December, the state added 13,500 jobs, the release stated.
Department of Economic Opportunity Executive Director Jesse Panuccio said the December decline from November’s 6.4 unemployment rate shows the state’s economy is “getting stronger every month.”
News of the latest unemployment decline comes on the heels of Scott’s announcement Thursday that his administration is planning to spend $30 million in workforce training aimed at helping students and current workers land high-skilled jobs.
It also comes as Scott prepares to unveil his full budget next week in Tallahassee.
Scott’s momentum in his re-election campaign continues to build, as Public Policy Polling shows him trailing former Gov. Charlie Crist – the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination – by only 2 points.
In a poll with a margin of error of 4 points, that’s a statistical tie. Public Policy Polling, a firm with deep ties to the Democratic Party, had Crist ahead by 12 points in March.
