Florida funeral home offers ‘first-ever’ on-site wine cellar

Just when you think you’ve seen it all, a Florida funeral home is offering the “first-ever” wine cellar in a funeral parlor in the state, and perhaps in the country.

“Nobody wants to go to a funeral. Nobody wants to stay at a funeral home,” Seth Minson, general manager of Hodges Funeral Home, told the local NBC affiliate. “So we’ve been renovating things.”

The Naples venue offers families a different way to grieve, Minso said. It also offers catering services for those who chose to stay on-site.

“They still want to have a party, still want to celebrate and have the means to mourn their loved ones…but they don’t want to do it over a person’s body,” he said.

While the goal is to make people feel comfortable, “almost like they weren’t even in a funeral home,” Minso said, the idea has drawn mixed reviews.

Lee Vumbacco of Naples told NBC-2 that it was strange, saying “they don’t seem to go together.”

But Judy Fowski, also of Naples liked the idea, adding that she liked the “celebration of life when people can stand around and talk.”

“Sure, there are tears, and sure, there’s sadness, but the fact of the matter is there’s a personal way to celebrate somebody,” Minso Told NBC-2. “The traditional and religious aspects I believe in. This is just something as an extension to some of the other families. We’re not trying to change what’s important to you – we’re trying to add something that may be important to someone else.”

The use of the wine cellar is entirely optional. Who knows – it could be a big hit.
