Administration: Website problems so bad it could bankrupt insurance companies

Syndicated columnist and physician Charles Krauthammer is predicting “all hell is going to break loose” when the bills come due for Obamacare in mid-March, while new documents released by the federal government show officials fearing bankruptcy for insurance companies.

Things are not going well, no matter what Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius might say.

The bankruptcy fears were raised in HHS documents used to justify a no-bid contract with Accenture to try to salvage the Healthcare.gov computer system that has failed so disastrously since Oct. 1, according to a Fox News report.

The website’s problems are so bad, the documents state, they put “the entire health insurance industry at risk” … “potentially leading to [the insurance companies’] default and disrupting continued services and coverage to consumers.”

While most of the attention has been on the website’s problems on the front end – where endless delays infuriated people trying to sign up – the really bad problems have been on the back end. That’s where the information that really matters – about where the money is coming from – is supposed to be.

But with that part still not built, according to Fox, insurers are dealing with “massive confusion, missing information on who’s signed up and what subsidies they get.”

If the problems are not fixed by mid-March, the documents state, “the entire health care reform program is jeopardized.”

While many Americans probably don’t care much about whether Obamacare is jeopardized, they care a great deal about whether their own insurance coverage – or their family’s – is in jeopardy.

And that’s exactly what’s going to happen without a major fix, Krauthammer predicted Wednesday on “Special Report with Bret Baier.”

“You’ve got a train wreck coming,” he said. “I think it’s going to come out slowly, it’s not all going to happen in one day, but I think they’re in deep trouble and the deadline is mid-March. If they don’t have this in place in mid-March, then there’s going to be — all hell’s going to break loose on this.”
