Romneys’ surprise visit to Sundance Film Festival for first view of ‘MITT’

Mitt Romney may not have been the favorite in the 2012 presidential campaign, but he was a hit during a surprise visit at the Sundance Film Festival on Friday.

The former governor and Republican presidential candidate, arrived unannounced with his wife, Ann, and some of their children for the premiere of the film, “MITT,” in Salt Lake City.

“I invited him, but I didn’t know if he was going to come,” director Greg Whiteley told Deadline, adding that the Romneys had not seen the film.

People in the lobby cheered, but the real excitement erupted inside the Rose Performing Arts Centre, according to Deadline, which reported:

Just before the screening began, Utah Gov. Gary Herbert praised Sundance and [Robert] Redford for their contributions to the state and then introduced Romney in the audience, saying, “We all wished the election had ended differently.” The room of 250-plus attendees rose in a standing ovation while the Romneys waived from their seats.

The political documentary chronicles Whiteley’s time with the Romneys from 2006 to 2012 throughout both his campaigns for president.

Whiteley, a Mormon, had admired the Romneys as a child, and was familiar with Mitt’s father, George Romney, according to The Associated Press.

“What Hank Greenberg and Sandy Koufax is to young Jewish kids, probably is what George Romney was to me,” Whiteley told the AP. “When I heard that Mitt Romney was running for president, I had just finished my second film and occurred to me that might make a great movie.”

The film will debut on Netflix on Jan. 24.
