On his CNN show Thursday night, Piers Morgan told a guest that he didn’t “want to speak ill” of the dead, then proceeded to do exactly that. He blamed the Sept. 11, 2012 terrorist attack of the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya on U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens, who was slain in that very attack.
Citing the Senate Intelligence Committee report released Wednesday, U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., was highly critical of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for the tragic events in Benghazi.
“When you actually get into the weeds of this pretty lengthy report, it also is very clear that one of the people who may be most to blame for not reacting to the threat and for increasing security despite being urged to repeatedly was the ambassador himself,” Morgan said. “And obviously you don’t want to speak ill of a man who was killed in such appalling circumstances, but is it fair to also say that he as the ambassador should have done more to react to direct warnings that he was given on numerous occasions?”
McCain wasn’t buying it. He noted that Stevens had repeatedly requested additional support. He said that what Stevens had turned down was uniformed military support.
