Outrage: Obama appoints cop-killer’s lawyer to lead DOJ’s Civil Rights Division

“Shock” and “outrage” can’t begin to describe the sentiment surrounding President Obama’s nominee to lead the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division – the lawyer responsible for getting a convicted cop-killer’s death sentence overturned.

Fox News’ Supreme Court correspondent Shannon Bream reported that Obama’s pick, Debo Adegbile, has been described as “radical, dangerous and outside the mainstream.”

Adegbile came on the case during the sentencing appeal of one-time Black Panther, Mumia Abu-Jamal, who was sentenced to death for the 1981 killing of Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner. Adegbile is credited for getting that death sentence lowered to life in prison through his work with the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund.

Widow Maureen Faulkner said she was “absolutely outraged” that Obama had chosen Adegbile to be the new Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights – a division that already has been slammed by the DOJ’s Inspector General for “inappropriate conduct, harassment of conservatives in the division, and the appearance of partisanship and racial politics,” Bream reported.

Faulkner said:

To have a man who defended a murderer, someone who murdered a police officer with premeditation and malice, is a radical, is a Black Panther, and to give him an appointment, to nominate him, to the Department of Justice, I mean it’s a disgrace.

Law enforcement around the country, led by the National Fraternal Order of Police, are also stunned and angered by the nomination.

The group sent a letter to Obama last week saying they wrote, “on behalf of the more than 330,000 members of the Fraternal Order of Police to express…disappointment, displeasure and vehement opposition to the nomination of Debo Adegbile.”

The letter, published on a website calling for Justice for Daniel Faulkner, read, in part:

[Faulkner’s] just sentence-death-was undone by your nominee and others like him who turned the justice system on its head with unfounded and unproven allegations of racism.

This nomination can be interpreted in only one way: it is a thumb in the eye of our nation’s law enforcement officers. It demonstrates a total lack of regard or empathy for those who strive to keep you and everyone else in our nation safe in your homes and neighborhoods-sometimes giving their lives in the effort.

According to Bream, Adegbile said he was “simply doing his job as a legal advocate while defending Abu-Jamal on a technical legal matter,” and he defended his work on the case during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing last week.

Incredibly, it is believed that Adegbile will still “successfully navigate the Senate votes necessary to be confirmed to head up the Civil Rights Division in the near future,” Bream said.
