Will she or won’t she?
Michelle Obama’s acolytes in the media have been pushing her as an icon of liberated womanhood since she pouted about how “downright mean” she thinks the country that made her a cosseted millionaire really is.
But in an interview with the hard-hitting investigative magazine People due out Friday, the first lady’s 50th birthday, Obama acknowledges she’s open to the idea of plastic surgery to improve her looks in the years ahead.
Apparently fielding a bare-knuckle question about whether she would consider Botox treatments or going under the knife to improve her looks – this is a People magazine interview – Obama hemmed, hawed and hedged.
“Women should have the freedom to do whatever they need to do to feel good about themselves,” she said, according to previews released by the magazine.
“Right now, I don’t imagine that I would go that route, but I’ve also learned to never say never.”
Experienced Obama watchers can read that answer like skywriting.
First, the non-answer is couched in some kind of feel-good twaddle – “women should have freedom to do whatever they need to do” – that the left generally loves because they know it only applies to them. (The Little Sisters of the Poor, for instance, are women too. Their freedom doesn’t count to the Obamas.)
Then the non-answer is followed with a Clintonian hedge like “I’ve also learned never say never.”
That means she’s going to get doctored up at some point. It probably means she’s got the appointment scheduled.
It might even mean the president’s already told her, “If I like your face, you can keep it.”
