A former mayor and member of Mayors Against Illegal Guns was sentenced Monday to 10 to 20 months in jail for intimidation with a firearm. Five years of probation, 50 hours of community service and $1,300 in fines and costs were tacked onto his sentence for the February incident.

Former Marcus Hook, Pa., Mayor James Schiliro had requested that a city police cruiser deliver former neighbor and love interest Nicholas Dorsamto to his home, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The mayor gave the 20-year-old alcohol, then refused to allow him to leave, firing a gun into a stack of papers. Schiliro eventually turned the gun on himself and threatened suicide, The Inquirer reported.

Schiliro wasn’t just a mayor but a member of Mayors Against Illegal Guns. He was also among 600 politicians who had signed a letter to Congress asking for stricter gun-control legislation, according to the National Review Online.

Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg founded Mayors Against Illegal Guns in 2006 along with then-Boston Mayor Thomas Menino.

Schiliro’s conviction marks the latest example of public figures pushing for ever-stricter gun control measures — as long as they don’t apply to them.

Like Hollywood actors, Bloomberg has been known to travel with armed security guards, all while claiming the country needs tough gun-control measures. U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., has a concealed carry permit – while calling for laws banning all guns.

I wouldn’t deny any of these people the right to defend their lives. But I’d ask that they stop trying to deny me the means to defend my own.
