Divided loyalties have been making things uncomfortable for a South Florida congresswoman, and a new 30-second spot put together by a political advocacy group is turning up the heat even more.
Watch the clip from the Emergency Committee for Israel:
Rumors began floating around Washington, D.C. a week ago that Democratic National Committee Chairwoman and U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz was playing both ends against the middle on increasing sanctions against Iran.
She’s been telling the constituents in her heavily-Jewish district that she’s doing everything in her power to keep the screws to Iran, by supporting a bipartisan deal to increase sanctions on the rogue state.
But she’s also throwing her support behind President Obama, who has repeatedly said he would veto any measure to strengthen sanctions.
Those rumors have been pretty much confirmed by Adam Kredo at the Washington Free Beacon, who reported:
Wasserman Schultz spokeswoman Mara Sloan told the Daily Beast’s Josh Rogin on Saturday that the lawmaker supports “holding off on new sanctions until the diplomacy plays out.”
However, Sloan said the opposite to Miami Herald reporter Marc Caputo.
“Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz has been a strong supporter of sanctions against Iran and will continue to be,” Sloan was quoted as saying.
The Emergency Committee for Israel is understandably not a bit happy about it, which explains the release of the video.
This is a problem created by the divided loyalties of her two positions. She has one set of loyalties to her constituents as a member of Congress. She has a whole different set of loyalties as DNC chairperson to the Democratic Party and its head, President Obama.
