Email invites have gone out for Michelle Obama’s “50 and fabulous” birthday party, but the instructions for guests are what have people talking.
The first lady’s “Snacks & Sips & Dancing & Dessert” party will not include dinner, and while it’s proper etiquette to let people know what to expect, telling guests to “eat before you come” may not be the most tactful way to say it, according to The Washington Post.
What’s being tagged as “EBYC” has party-planning tongues wagging.
“I don’t think it’s rude, but I do think it’s a little … different than what people are used to,” Lizzie Post, great-great-granddaughter of etiquette queen Emily Post, told The Washington Post. The co-author of “Great Get-Togethers: Casual Gatherings and Elegant Parties at Home” added, “How’s that for putting it delicately?”
Colin Cowie, Oprah Winfrey’s favorite entertainment expert, also had a not-so approving reaction.
“To ask people to ‘eat before you come’ is not the way I would have done it,” Cowie said, according to The Post. “I always think of the food. When it comes to making people feel welcome, we give them great music, a well-stocked bar and excellent food — and you do it abundantly.”
Guests are also being told to wear comfortable shoes and practice their dance moves. The party appears to be casual, but no word on who is invited or who will perform, according to the Chicago Tribune.
But nearly a year ago,the Daily Mail had a possible scoop on expected performers.
“America’s first lady will be holding a huge celebrity-packed party for her birthday at the White House next year and, as she adores Adele and Beyonce, she has asked them both to sing,” a source told the Daily Mail in March 2013.
“Adele has graciously accepted and waived her usual fee for the high-profile private performance,” the source said, adding that “the Obamas will pay Adele’s expenses as it’s a private party, not a state one.”
The party will be held at the White House on Jan. 18.
