Priebus to NBC’s bullying Gregory: Christie fired people; Obama doubles down on his mistakes

There’s a world of difference between the way President Obama handles a crisis and how New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie did at his Thursday press conference in the wake of “Bridge-gate.” And the national GOP chairman wants everyone to know it.

NBC’s “Meet the Press” host David Gregory and Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus locked horns on the issue Sunday. The newsman tried to get the politician to admit that Christie was responsible for the scandal because he created a “culture” of acolytes “afraid to say no to him.” Priebus wasn’t buying it.

“He trusted people that lied to him, and he fired those people,” Priebus said. “The president doubles down on Eric Holder, he doubles down on Hillary Clinton and Lois Lerner and Susan Rice. It’s the opposite effect.”

By contrast, Priebus said, Christie answered reporters’ questions for 111 minutes.

“If Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton would give us 111 seconds of that, we’d find out some things we want to find out about Obamacare, Benghazi, the IRS,” he said.

That’s when Gregory accused Priebus of “deflecting” the issue, reminding him that he’d previously blamed the IRS targeting scandal on the “tone” the president set in his administration. The NBC host asked why the same didn’t apply to Christie.

“Because Chris Christie gave us almost two hours of open dialogue and cross-examination with the press,” Priebus replied. “You can judge a person’s character. We had an opportunity to do that. That’s what Chris Christie offered, not only to the people of New Jersey, but to the people across the country. The president never offered that open dialogue so that people could determine his character.”

As the odds increase for a 2014 Democratic “shellacking,” the more the mainstream media want to knock Republicans off their perch.

When CNN chief Jeff Zucker claimed that the GOP was being run out of the offices of Fox News, Priebus shot back in a tweet:
