Republican lawmakers are accusing Attorney General Eric Holder of rigging the outcome of the Justice Department’s investigation of an IRS scandal by appointing a “significant” Obama contributor to lead the probe.
In their letter to Holder, Reps. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, and Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, said they discovered that before Barbara Kay Bosserman took over the investigation, she donated more than $6,000 to the president’s campaigns, according to The Washington Times.
The scandal in question involved the IRS’s targeting of conservative groups, which many believe helped President Obama’s re-election efforts.
“By selecting a significant donor to President Obama to lead an investigation into inappropriate targeting of conservative groups, the Department has created a startling conflict of interest,” Issa and Jordan wrote. “It is unbelievable that the Department would choose such an individual to examine the federal government’s systematic targeting and harassment of organizations opposed to the President’s policies.”
Bosserman did not respond to The Times’ request for comment by press time. But Justice Department spokeswoman Dena Iverson did.
“It is contrary to department policy and a prohibited personnel practice under federal law to consider the political affiliation of career employees or other non-merit factors in making personnel decisions,” she said, without addressing the lawmakers’ concerns.
In their letter, Issa and Jordan didn’t accuse Holder, or anyone in the Justice Department, of considering Bosserman’s political leanings in making the appointment. They merely suggested it may have compromised the investigation.
“At the very least, Ms. Bosserman’s involvement is highly inappropriate and has compromised the Administration’s investigation of the IRS,” the letter said.
