Oklahomans may have the opportunity to sit in the lap of Satan, if the Satanic Temple has their way in erecting a monument in the state Capitol Building in Oklahoma City.
The New York-based Satanic Temple submitted a design for a “7-foot-tall goat-headed Baphomet figure sitting cross-legged on a stone slab, flanked by two smiling children,” according to Raw Story.
“The monument has been designed to reflect the views of Satanists in Oklahoma City and beyond,” spokesman Lucien Greaves said, according to Raw Story. “The statue will serve as a beacon calling for compassion and empathy among all living creatures. The statue will also have a functional purpose as a chair where people of all ages may sit on the lap of Satan for inspiration and contemplation.”
Some state legislators are not supportive of the idea.
“I think you’ve got to remember where you are. This is Oklahoma, the middle of the heartland,” state Rep. Don Armes, R-Faxon, told the Associated Press. “I think we need to be tolerant of people who think different than us, but this is Oklahoma, and that’s not going to fly here.”
A Ten Commandments monument was erected in December, prompting requests for displays from “a Hindu leader in Nevada, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, and the satirical Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster,” according to the Associated Press. The Oklahoma Capitol Preservation Commission subsequently voted to put a moratorium on any further displays.
“This is a faith-based nation and a faith-based state,” state Rep. Earl Sears, R-Bartlesville, said according to Raw Story. “I think it is very offensive they would contemplate or even have this kind of conversation.”
The Satanic Temple and the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster also attempted to erect displays in Florida in December.
