Marco Rubio’s new agenda to address failed ‘war on poverty’

On Sunday, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio began outlining changes he wants to see implemented after 50 years of failed and expensive policies from President Lyndon B. Johnson’s “big government war on poverty.”

Rubio published a two-minute YouTube video days before Wednesday’s 50th anniversary of Johnson’s declaration of a war on poverty to call for changes and “real reform.”

“Well, since then, American taxpayers have spent about 20 trillion dollars on welfare and other government programs that claim to lift people out of poverty,” he said. “And yet today, tens of millions of Americans live beneath the poverty line.”

Rubio continued, in part:

“[For] millions of Americans living in poverty, the American Dream doesn’t seem reachable. And that’s unacceptable

After 50 years isn’t it time to declare big government’s war on poverty a failure? Instead of continuing to borrow and spend trillions of dollars on government programs that don’t work, what our nation needs is a real agenda that helps people acquire the skills they need to lift themselves out of poverty and to pursue the American dream.

This agenda would create an economy with more good-paying middle class jobs and a government with less debt. It would repeal Obamacare and it would replace it with more affordable health care options. It would save and strengthen our retirement programs for future generations.

“Now, in the coming months, I’ll be detailing many of these ideas, and I hope that you’ll join me in that discussion, so that 50 years from now, nobody in America will be trapped in a life of poverty,” Rubio concluded.

“So that the American Dream remains alive for our children and our grandchildren, just as it was for us, our parents and other Americans who came before us.”
