When Nevada passed legislation last year allowing illegal immigrants to obtain driving privilege cards — signed into law by Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval — not much thought was given to whether the applicants could actually pass the test.
As it turns out, most cannot.
According to Department of Motor Vehicles officials, an estimated 75 percent of illegal immigrants have failed the written test needed for the card under the new law, the local CBS affiliate reported.
The cards became available Thursday and applicants must correctly answer 80 percent of 50 questions, in addition to passing a driving exam, to receive cards, the report stated.

“You need to study the (driver’s) handbook, make sure you have all the documentation and then come on in,” spokesman Kevin Malone told KSNV-TV in Las Vegas.
The report does not state whether the test is offered in both English and Spanish.
Since Thursday, hundreds of illegal immigrants have turned out to obtain the driving privilege cards.
“The offices are just packed,” Malone said. “The Sahara and Decatur offices [Las Vegas] have reached the capacity of the building so we have to wait for people to leave before we let more people walk in.”
In Reno and Carson City, according to the report, offices began turning applicants away several hours before they closed to process those already there.
