Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu lectured U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry Saturday on the Palestinian leadership’s lack of commitment to reach a peaceful coexistence with the Jewish state.
Kerry expressed hope for an Israeli-Palestinian accord after meeting multiple times with Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas over the last three days, according to Agence France-Presse.
“We’re not there yet, but we are making progress,” Kerry said Saturday, adding that both parties were “working with great intensity” to reach an agreement for peace.
Well, maybe not both parties.
After welcoming Kerry back to Jerusalem and praising him for his efforts, Netanyahu detailed for the secretary the reality of dealing with a terror-driven Palestine.
“I know that you’re committed to peace. I know that I’m committed to peace,” the Israeli leader said. “But unfortunately, given the actions and words of Palestinian leaders, there’s growing doubt in Israel that the Palestinians are committed to peace.”
Netanyahu disclosed a recent series of horrific terrorist acts directed toward “innocent Israeli men and women,” while “Abbas embraced [the] terrorists as heroes.” The prime minister said Palestinian Security Force members participated in at least one of those attacks.
Throughout much of the lecture, Kerry either looked down or away from Netanyahu, looking for all the world like he’d rather be somewhere else – maybe sailing on Nantucket Sound.
“John, the people of Israel and I are prepared to make such an historic peace,” Netanyahu said. “But we must have a Palestinian partner who’s equally prepared to make this peace.”
