During NBC’s coverage of the New Year’s Eve Times Square celebration, one guest made a tasteless joke suggesting that World War II veterans were too old to chew solid food.
On “New Year’s Eve with Carson Daly,” which included a panel consisting of actors and comedians, host Daly brought up the recent SpaghettiO’s faux pas where it used its brand name and mascot to pay tribute to Pearl Harbor Day.
“It wasn’t good,” Daly said after describing the blunder. “But you were offended for another reason,” he said, turning to guest Jane Lynch.
“I’m offended because they were referring to SpaghettiOs as pasta,” she said.
That’s when Natasha Leggero came up with her own blunder, far worse than anything SpaghettiOs had done.
“I mean, it sucks that the only survivors of Pearl Harbor are being mocked by the only food they can still chew,” she said. “It’s just sad.”
As tasteless as the joke was, guest Anthony Anderson howled with laughter as Lynch had a big grin pasted on her face.
NewsBusters reader Abigail Adams nicely summed up the exchange:
This obviously was pre-planned…a set up. Probably scripted. MSNBC & NBC just have to find victims for bullying. My late Father was at Normandy, purple heart. My cousin was at Pearl Harbor…My Uncle was the highest decorated WWII soldier in our town. And these parasites at NBC have to degrade the greatest generation by taking cheap shots for what they think is entertaining.
