U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, has no regrets after his first year as a freshman senator, and even blamed President Obama and U.S. Sen. Harry Reid, D-Navada, for the government shutdown in an interview Sunday.
ABC’s Jonathan Karl asked Cruz if it was a mistake to link the budget resolution to funding Obamacare.
“I think it was absolutely a mistake for President Obama and Harry Reid to force a government shutdown,” Cruz said.
Cruz was featured as one of “This Week’s” 2013 game changers because of his runner-up status for Time magazine’s Person of the Year, his 21-hour filibuster, his strong relationship with House conservatives, his labeling as a “wacko bird” by Republican Sen. John McCain, and his feature role in a top-selling coloring book.
“Do you want people in Washington to like you?” Karl asked. “Do you care? I mean, does it bother you that a lot of people around here just don’t like you?”
“What I want to do is to serve 26 million Texans,” Cruz said. “I want to do my job. That’s really my focus.”
Cruz said he tries his best not to pay attention to Washington politics, but Karl wasn’t buying it.
“Really?” Karl asked. Cruz didn’t flinch.
“I know that’s hard to believe, because no one in this town does that,” Cruz said. “This is a time for people to stand up and do the right thing.”
