An Ohio high school teacher is facing serious disciplinary action after reportedly telling a black student the country doesn’t need “another black president.”

Gil Voight, a science teacher at Fairfield Freshman High School, has been suspended without pay and may yet be fired for allegedly telling a male student, “We do not need another black president,” after the student expressed interest in becoming president someday, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported.

Four other students confirmed the Dec. 3 incident in an interview with school board officials who “conducted a disciplinary hearing on the matter,” according to a report from Assistant Superintendent Roger Martin, the Enquirer said.

Voight, who was “accused of violating board policies related to staff ethics, staff-student relations and harassment,” has a less than stellar record, the article noted:

It isn’t the first time the 14-year Fairfield teacher has been disciplined. He received a verbal warning for making an inappropriate racial comment in 2008. That year he also received a verbal warning for improper use of school technology.

Last year he received a verbal warning after allegedly calling a student “stupid” and belittling him. He received a written warning last month for failure to use the adopted curriculum.

In this case, Voight claimed, “his statement was misquoted by the student, who he said was not a very good student and was troublesome in class,” according to the report.

The student was removed from Voight’s class at the request of his parents.
