Female Marines not required to do even one pull-up; mandate lifted

pull-upA deadline requiring female service members in the Marine Corps to do a minimum of three pull-ups as part of their training has been delayed for at least a year.

Male service members are required to do at least three pull-ups as part of the Physical Fitness Test, but the Corps quietly announced on social media that the upcoming Jan. 1, 2014 deadline mandating females to meet the same standard has been delayed, according to CNS News.

Females are currently not required to do even a single pull-up, but must do a flexed-arm hang.

“Women aren’t able to make the minimum standard of three pull-ups,” Marine spokesman Capt. Eric Flanagan told CNS News.

According to the report, fifty-five percent of female recruits tested at the end of boot camp were unable to do three pull-ups — 1 percent of male recruits failed.

There is a concern that the Corps will lose not only new recruits that can’t meet the three pull-up requirement, but also current female Marines who can’t pass the test.

The affirmative action mentality spurred by these results is not likely to impress an enemy on the battlefield.

When the ban on women serving in combat positions was lifted by the Obama administration in January, the U.S. military said it will apply the same standards to men and women and will not lower requirements.

U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., supported the move while urging the military to ensure they maintain their “rigorous physical standards,” Fox News reported at the time.

That was then, this is now.

CNS News reported on the importance of pull-ups:

Pull-ups have been used to test Marines’ upper body strength for over 40 years. The ability to pull-up one’s own body weight over a bar shows the upper body strength that, in combat, is needed to lift fallen comrades, pull one’s self over a wall, and carry heavy munitions. Combat Marines also carry a pack that weighs around 90 pounds, with gunners carrying an additional 50 or 60 pounds.
