First federal ‘hate crime’ charges brought against white suspect in ‘knockout game’

US AG Eric Holder

Eric Holder’s Justice Department has for the first time charged an assailant with a federal hate crime in the so-called “knockout game.” Although the vast majority of prior “knockout” assaults were committed by blacks against whites, this one involved a white man attacking a black man.

Conrad Alvin Barrett, 27, recorded a video of his assault on a 79-year-old black man in Fulshear, Texas, then bragged about the incident afterwards, according to The Washington Times.

“Suspected crimes of this nature will simply not be tolerated,” U.S. Attorney Kenneth Magidson said in a statement Thursday. “Evidence of hate crimes will be vigorously investigated and prosecuted with the assistance of all our partners to the fullest extent of the law.”

If convicted, Barrett could face up to 10 years in prison.

“Knockout” attacks, which have gained notoriety in the last couple of months, involve an assailant sucker-punching an unsuspecting victim, aiming to knock him out with a single blow.

In one instance, a black youth who targeted a Jewish man was charged under a state hate crime law in New York, according to The Washington Times.

The Times reported:

The FBI said that in a video from Nov. 24, the day of the assault, Mr. Barrett said he wanted “to see if I were to hit a black person, would this be nationally televised?” The video shows him stopping his car, approaching the 79-year-old man and asking, “How’s it going, man?” — before “a loud smack is heard and the victim falls to the ground.”

“Barrett laughs, says ‘knockout,’ and then flees,” the FBI affidavit says.

“It is unimaginable in this day and age that one could be drawn to violently attack another based on the color of their skin,” FBI Special Agent in Charge Stephen L. Morris said, according to The Daily Caller. “We remind all citizens we are protected under the law from such racially motivated attacks and encourage everyone to report such crimes to the FBI.”

Such “racially motivated attacks” have been reported across the country, including New York, the District of Columbia, St. Louis, Mo., and other Midwestern cities. But this is believed to be the first time someone has been charged with a federal hate crime, according to The Times

What Barrett did in targeting the elderly African American is disgusting. It’s just as disgusting when blacks target whites.
