Touching story of woman’s wish granted to her family two years after her death

Brenda Schmitz 3 wishesA woman dying of ovarian cancer left a special request for her family that was fulfilled two years after she died.

When Brenda Schmitz of Des Moines, Iowa, found out she was dying of cancer, she wrote a letter to radio station KSTZ “Star” 102.5, asking that the family be granted three Christmas wishes, but only after her husband had fallen in love again.

A friend held the letter until the appropriate time, and then sent it to the station anonymously.

“About a week and half ago, we got a letter in the mail,” station Brand Manager Scott Allen told the DeMoines Register Friday. “We’ve been doing the Christmas Wish program for 20-plus years. We’ve never received a wish like this, ever.”

Radio station executives brought in David Schmitz, telling him they had a wish to grant him, but without divulging the details until they read the letter to him.

“When you are in receipt of this letter, I will have already lost my battle to ovarian cancer,” Brenda Schmitz wrote. “I told [my friend] once my loving husband David had moved on in his life and had met someone to share his life with again, to mail this letter to all of you at the station.”

Schmitz listed these wishes in the letter, according to the Register:

The first wish: For something that would pamper David’s new partner (Jane, to whom David proposed this past summer).

“She deserves it,” Brenda Schmitz wrote. “Being a step-mother to all those boys, and especially giving little Max a mother’s love that only she can give. Make her smile and know her efforts are truly appreciated from me.”

Schmitz adds: “Thank you. I love you, whoever you are.”

Schmitz second wish was for her family.

“For the family: a magical trip,” she wrote. “Somewhere where they all can enjoy their company and companionship as a family and create those memories that will be with them forever.”

Her final wish was for the cancer nurses and doctors in her unit at Mercy Medical Center: “A night out full of drinks, food and fun for all they do every day for the cancer patients they encounter.”

Numerous contributors and sponsors coordinated an all-expense paid trip to Disney World for the family of eight, and Schmitz’s fiance was treated to a relaxing massage.
