Utah’s sole Democratic member of Congress announced Tuesday that he will not seek re-election in 2014, thus paving the way for a GOP favorite to take that district in 2014.
U.S. Rep. Jim Matheson, D-Utah, made the announcement on his Facebook page after having served in Congress for 13 years.
Matheson bested his Republican challenger, Mia Love, in 2012 by a razor thin margin of 0.3 percentage points, 48.8 to Love’s 48.5. The balance of the votes went to a Libertarian challenger.
Upon hearing the news, senior Washington Examiner writer Philip Klein tweeted:
Get ready to start writing “Rep. Mia Love, R-Utah” https://t.co/yyPx9hKf0h

Love currently serves as mayor of Saratoga Springs, and announced her intention to give the congressional bid another go back in May, stating, “We have some unfinished business with Jim Matheson,” according to the Desert News.
The young, black conservative came to the public’s attention during her speech before the Republican National Convention in August, where she related her compelling story of being born to Haitian parents who came to America with a desire to succeed but with very little money.
Here’s her speech, and as Klein said, “get ready to start writing, ‘Rep. Mia Love, R-Utah.’”
