An internal poll conducted by Gov. Rick Scott’s campaign shows new gains by Scott in a matchup against former Gov. Charlie Crist, with Crist now ahead by 4 percentage points, according to a Politico report.
The poll was taken Nov. 24-26 and included 1,000 likely Florida voters, Politico reported.
The 4-point Crist advantage – essentially a tie on a poll with a margin of error of 3 percent – compares to a 7-point lead Crist had in a Quinnipiac University poll released Nov. 21.
Crist had an even wider lead before officially announcing his candidacy: in November. In June a poll showed him leading 47 to 37 percent, and in March he was up over Crist by 16 points, 50 percent to 34 percent.
According to Politico, the leaked poll showed Scott ahead on six of 10 issues respondents were asked about.
Scott led by 14 points on reducing state spending; 12 points on reducing taxes; 9 points on balancing the state budget; 5 points on improving the state’s economy; 3 points on “standing up to Tallahassee insiders”; and 2 points on job creation.
According to Politico, Crist led on more amorphous areas like “cares about people like me,” 8 points; “most honest and ethical,” 4 points; “someone I trust to be governor,” 3 points; and “shares my beliefs and values,” 2 points. (That last is actually kind of funny. If Charlie Crist doesn’t share your beliefs and values today, you might just want to wait until next week. Things might be different.)
Aside from a consistently dropping unemployment rate, Scott was probably helped by the continuing debacle of Obamacare, which is hurting President Obama in Florida and Democrats generally.
Crist, of course, is notorious for the 2009 photo that shows him physically embracing the president during a 2009 event publicizing the federal stimulus package.
Fifty-one percent of those poll viewed Obama unfavorably compared to 44 percent who viewed him favorable. Obamacare itself fares even worth than the president, opposed by 55 percent of those polled versus 38 percent who favor it.
Even more striking, passions are much stronger against Obamacare, with 48 percent of those who oppose it saying they feel strongly about it. Only 27 percent of those who favor it feel strongly about it.
President Barack Obama is 7 points underwater in the Sunshine State, which he narrowly carried last year. A slight majority, 51 percent, view him unfavorably, and 44 percent view him favorably.
A majority of likely Florida voters oppose Obamacare, 55 percent to 38 percent. The intensity of opposition is strong: 48 percent strongly oppose the health care law, compared to 27 percent who strongly favor it.
