Obama rodeo clown leads voting as ‘Person of the Year’

Obama-Rodeo clownTuffy Gessling, better known as the Obama rodeo clown, is running away with the 2013 “Person of the Year” in Sedalia, Missouri.

According to the local CBS affiliate, Tuffy has received more than half of the votes out of a total of seven nominees — the voting ends Thursday.

A firestorm of criticism erupted in August when a President Obama supporter cried racism after seeing “Tuffy the Clown” don a mask bearing the likeness of the president during a bull riding competition at the Missouri State Fair.

“I felt like I was at a Klan rally,” Perry Beam said at the time.

Never mind that the stunt had been employed for at least two decades, having used masks in the past to depict Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton.

Nevertheless, in the hyper-sensitive age of Obama, Gessling was barred from ever performing at the fair again.

The town’s “Person of the Year” award is the idea of a local disc jockey, who said the award is not necessarily about the nice guys, but those who had the biggest impact and Tuffy fit the bill, KMOX reported.

“I think that’s another reason why he’s doing so well, he actually has a lot of fans, believe it or not,” disc jockey Rob Edwards said. “I’ve met him a few times, he seems like a cool guy.”
