White House press secretary Jay Carney was – once again – put in a position of defending his boss, this time for earning the distinction of Politifact’s “Lie of the Year,” saying year-end lists are “always fun.”
Politifact announced Thursday that President Obama’s statement that Americans can keep their health plan of choice was so wrong, the political fact-checking organization crowned it the “Lie of the Year.”
At Friday’s press briefing, CNN’s Brianna Keilar asked Carney if the White House or Obama worried the false promise would be “cemented in history.”
“As you know, the president in an interview, earlier this fall, took this question head on and expressed his concern for those individuals,” Carney said. “Those Americans who received cancellation notices and were potentially adversely impacted by or affected by that, and took action to encourage states and state insurance commissioners to allow those who wanted to stay on existing plans to stay on them longer. So I think he’s, in a very honest way, addressed this question.”
What?
“End-of-the-year categorizations like that are always fun, even when they don’t jive with past characterizations of the same exact statement,” he said.
Carney referred back to the talking points, saying, “But, we’re focused on the implementation of the Affordable Care Act.”
