In an open letter to establishment Republicans, a former Secret Service agent running for a congressional seat in Maryland announced Thursday he is divorcing the party over its civil war with grassroots members.
“I am serving you with divorce papers,” Republican candidate Daniel Bongino said in the letter posted on his Facebook page. “For those who are unaware of what happened, the establishment wing of the Party has openly declared war on the grassroots.” https://www.facebook.com/dan.bongino/posts/570403906385708
The GOP’s bitter division became widely apparent when U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, spoke for 21 hours on the Senate floor in support of dismantling the Affordable Care Act. While his tea party supporters loved him for it, the establishment wing joined Democrats in excoriating him.
“For those who say this fight is hurting the Republican ‘brand’ I reply; it is those on both sides of the aisle who have betrayed their principles in the name of Party, that have destroyed their ‘brands’,” Bongino wrote. “As for the GOP, we used to stand for something; a lean, effective government, vibrant and robust individual liberty, and a passionate defense of the value of hard work and a commensurate respect for your wages by consistently fighting for your right to keep more of them. Where do you stand now? I know where the grassroots does.”
The late President Ronald Reagan proved the GOP can best win elections by adhering to its principles of limited government, free-market solutions and personal responsibility.
“This is our Party and we will demonstrate to the people we hope to represent that there is a group of people out there who refuse to be part of any ‘managed decline.’ We will only be part of a spectacular American resurrection,” Bongino wrote.
Indeed, it was the tea party’s emergence and its insistence on supporting only candidates of principle that led to what’s now widely known as the congressional “shellacking” of 2010.
“America’s best days are ahead and you and your fellow insiders and cronyists and ‘Party before country’ loyalists, on both sides of the aisle, can bathe in your titles and power now but understand that I, and many others, have dedicated our lives to draining the dirty water from the bathtub,” Bongino said. “Consider yourself served.”
Bongino has never been shy about speaking his mind. A Second Amendment supporter, he wowed the crowd at a February rally by saying, “There’s no such thing as gun control. There’s only people control.”
He told Glenn Beck in November that although he admired President Obama’s sense of family and fatherly responsibility, he saw his administration as one without constitutional restraints.
“For all the disagreements I had with Clinton, Carter and Bush, there were always limits — there was that line you just didn’t cross,” Bongino said at the time????. “We cross it seemingly every day. We’re lost in the scandals.”
