A Colorado first-grader was suspended from school and had a “sexual harassment” label added to his record because he kissed the hand of a girl with whom he had a crush. Incidentally, the little girl likes the boy back.
“It was during class yeah,” said Hunter Yelton, 6, to KRDO TV. “We were doing reading group and I leaned over and kissed her on the hand. That’s what happened.”
According to the boy’s mother, it was all innocent, and the object of her son’s puppy love crush didn’t complain.
“She was fine with it, they are ‘boyfriend and girlfriend’” said Jennifer Saunders, Hunter’s mom. “The other children saw it and went to the music teacher. That was the day I had the meeting with the principal, where she first said ‘sexual harassment’. This is taking it to an extreme that doesn’t need to be met with a six year old. Now my son is asking questions… ‘what is sex mommy?’ That should not ever be said, sex. Not in a sentence with a six year old.”
Hunter, however, doesn’t appear bitter about the suspension.
“They sent me to the office, fair and square,” he said. “I did something wrong and I feel sorry.”
This isn’t the first time he’s been punished for his prepubescent crush. He was placed on probation another time for kissing the same girl — that time it was on the cheek.
“We’ve been working with him with the classroom disruption. He was grounded for awhile. Big restrictions,” said Saunders.
Suspension is one thing, but sexual harassment? Hunter’s mother agrees.
“How can you do this? How can you say this about my child?” asked Saunders. “Remove sexual harassment, remove it from his record. I’m going to stand up and fight for him because that’s not the case, that’s not what happened at all.”
First it was toy guns, paper guns, Pop-Tart guns and even finger guns. Now schools want to ban puppy love? It looks like “Spin the Bottle” and “Post Office” will go the way of “Cops and Robbers” and “Cowboys and Indians.”
