Parents and a Texas lawmaker are plenty steamed at an elementary school’s idea of a Christmas party. There will be no Christmas tree, the words “Christmas” and “Hanukkah” are prohibited, along with even the colors red and green. Oh, and it’s dubbed a “winter party.”
Parents received an email from the party’s organizers at Nichols Elementary School in Frisco, Texas. It combined the above into two party rules for for everyone to follow, along with a third: The kids should bring “nothing that will stain the carpet,” according to MyFoxDFW.
“I agree with number three, but not one and two,” said state Rep. Pat Fallon who was forwarded the email by an angry parent.
Fallon co-drafted the Merry Christmas bill, passed by the legislature and signed into law by Gov. Rick Perry earlier this year. It specifically makes it OK to say “Merry Christmas,” “Happy Hanukkah” and “Happy holidays” in Texas schools.
“We’re celebrating Christmas, so why can’t it be a Christmas party or maybe a holiday party?” said Fallon. “But they’ve skipped over ‘holiday’ and go to ‘winter.’ That’s political correctness gone too far.”
The lawmaker got conflicting stories when he tried to investigate further. Both the school district and district PTA claimed they have no such policy. Nonetheless the ban apparently remains in place. He received yet another email from from a parent. It read:
“Today at the PTA meeting it was stated that they had decided to keep everything the same. She said they didn’t want to offend any families and since each family donates money they feel this is the best policy.”
