Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is not only one of Obamacare’s most outspoken cheerleaders, he also saw fit to exempt some of his staff members from the necessity of buying insurance through the exchange.
“Obamacare is a wonderful piece of legislation,” Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said on the Senate floor early last month, according to Townhall. “Let’s make it better. Stop carping about this. Get over it. It’s the law. It’s the legacy of Barack Obama and always will be.”
Reid is the lone exception among top Congressional leaders. His Senate counterpart, Republican Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, directed his staff to live under Obamacare, as have House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. But Reid is special, even though it’s “a wonderful piece of legislation,” according to CNN.
Although the law requires that members of Congress and their personal staff participate in the exchange, it also permits the lawmakers to determine whether committee and leadership staffers will also participate or be able to hold on to their federal employee insurance plans. Reid said they can keep their federal insurance.
At a time when red state Democrats facing re-election are scrambling to distance themselves from Obamacare as much as possible, Reid’s decision gives their GOP opponents even more ammunition.
“I’m sure that regular Americans who just lost their insurance will feel comforted to know that Senator Reid’s staff gets to keep their government plan,” an unnamed senior GOP Senate aide said according to CNN.
Amanda Carpenter, senior communications advisor to U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, took note and tweeted:
She then reminded us of how the Affordable Care Act got rammed through Congress.
And another Tweeper reminded us of Reid’s words on the Senate Floor in early November.
