A Sun-Sentinel columnist has started a petition drive to add that most useful of commodities – toilet paper – to Florida’s lengthy list of items that are exempt from sales taxes.
The list already includes sports items like Super Bowl tickets, college stadium luxury seats and charter fishing boats, as well as luxury food items like jumbo stone crabs, or even mundane food items such as chocolate chips.
But toilet paper is still on the tax rolls. (So if the tax man doesn’t have you coming, he does have you going, you might say.)
Columnist Michael Mayo’s petition – dubbed “Spare the Squares” – is addressed to state Sens. Dorothy Hukill, R-Port Orange, and Jeremy Ring, D-Margate, chairman and vice chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Finance and Tax, and state Rep. Ritch Workman, R-Melbourne, and George Moraitis, R-Fort Lauderdale, chairman and vice chairman of the House Finance and Tax Subcommittee.
The petition, available on the petition-pushing website change.org, doesn’t just stop at toilet paper, though.
It asks lawmakers to include “other personal hygiene necessities (i.e. toothpaste) from state sales tax.”
There’s no doubt politics plays a huge role in what makes the list of tax exemptions in Florida, and no doubt there are a lot of special interests with a lot at stake in every tax-exemption decision.
But a sales tax-exemption on toilet paper seems like one every interest group could … well … get behind.
