White House claims sham victory in meeting latest Healthcare.gov deadline

With the assurance of Soviet central planners that the latest five-year plan was a glorious success in putting the USSR on track to meeting all economic targets – just not this year – Obamacare administrators tried to use their media loudspeakers at a news conference Sunday to announce the train wreck of Obamacare is on track toward working as intended.

obamacare1201“The bottom line is health care.gov on December first is night and day from where it was October first,” Jeffrey Zients, the man in charge of fixing the problems, told reporters at a news briefing Sunday, according to USA Today. “The site is now stable and operating at its intended capacity at greatly improved performance.”

But the report released Sunday by President Obama’s Department of Health and Human Services gives the game away.

For anyone who isn’t willing to give the administration the benefit of the doubt – which should be anyone who follows the news in this country – the report makes clear that the half-billion-dollar website that was supposed to work like Amazon or Orbitz is still way behind, no matter how the apparatchiks at HHS try to spin it in their report.

With no usable definitions of words – a hallmark of duplicitous contractors and totalitarian thought — the eight-page report consists of an “overview” summing up the problems Healthcare.gov has faced so far.

They’re framed in classic corporate-speak (“a relentless focus on execution” for instance), illustrated with lots of graphics showing alleged improvements. And the report concludes, to absolutely no one’s surprise, that “we believe we have met the goal of having a system that will work smoothly for the vast majority of users.”

Leave aside for a second that the sentence means nothing. Whether it works at all it will be called working “smoothly” if it suits the political need, which it will. Whether it works for one person or a million, it will be called “the vast majority” of users if it suits the political need, which it will.

What in the world were the technocrats trying to make a hash of one-sixth of the American economy supposed to say? “Yep, the whole thing’s a failure and we wish we never got involved in it. When’s the next flight back to L.A.?”

Two months from its much-ballyhooed start date, the centerpiece of Obama’s miserable tenure as president of the United States is just as disastrous as it was Oct. 1, and all the eight-page reports filled with charts and graphs, generous use of marginal white space in the Ministry of Plenty won’t change that.
