Cardinal Timothy Dolan believes the Catholic Church is losing the messaging war on gay marriage.
“I think maybe we’ve been out-marketed sometimes,” the New York cardinal told “Meet the Press” host David Gregory on Sunday, according to the Associated Press. “We’ve been caricatured as being anti-gay.”
When asked whether gay marriage would eventually be “legal everywhere,” regardless of the church’s stance, Dolan said, “I think I’d be a Pollyanna to say that there doesn’t seem to be kind of a stampede to do this. I regret that.”
The church does support traditional marriage, he said, but that doesn’t mean it’s “anti-anybody,” according to AP. “When you have forces like Hollywood, when you have forces like politicians, when you have forces like some opinion-molders that are behind it, it’s a tough battle.”
Messaging is a long-time political reality, but it is unreal and frustrating for those who value truth.
On another pressing topic, Dolan said U.S. Catholic bishops cannot support Obamacare unless it drops coverage for abortion. Bishops, he said, long ago began “bristling” at President Obama’s signature plan because “it’s excluding the undocumented immigrant and it’s excluding the unborn baby,” AP reported.
Conservatives are bristling, too. They don’t wish to pay for the killing of unborn babies.
