Everyone just relax! Congress off for six-week paid holiday vacation

Congress is gearing up for another government shutdown – except this one’s called “the holidays.”

With the House and Senate already closed for Thanksgiving, they’re going to be back in business at the same time for only four days for the rest of the year, Dec. 10-13, according to the National Journal.

harryreidturkey1127That means there’s virtually no chance for a real budget deal for 2015 and the fiscal fights of 2014 are going to bleed into 2014, since the deal that ended the stop-Obamacare shutdown in October only lasts through Jan. 15. And that means Congress will return to work Jan. 6 with a week to come up with a way to pay for the government after that.

“All told,” writes the National Journal’s Tim Alberta, “the two chambers of Congress have scheduled just 10 days in session together between Nov. 22 and Jan. 15, out of a possible 51 days, not counting Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day.”

In other words, they’re making a hash of it — again. Republicans and Democrats alike getting paid a pretty penny for what amounts to a six-week vacation and accomplishing zilch.

And for this conservatives can give thanks.

Let’s face it. Whatever the federal government has done since Democrats won control of both houses of Congress and the Obama Era began, damn little of it has been good for the country, and that isn’t going to change any time soon.

Whenever pundits talk about how “productive” a Congress is, when they talk about how much is or isn’t getting accomplished, what they’re talking about is passing laws – and only a liberal could think there’s anything “productive” about that.

Remember Christmas Eve 2009? That’s when a disgracefully “productive” Senate, under the disgraceful Majority Leader Harry Reid passed Obamacare on a straight party-line vote. Anybody pining for a more productive Congress now?

Anyone who thinks congressional holidays are too long should seriously consider the alternative of having Harry Reid’s Senate in business even longer than it already is.

Take your time about coming back, Senator Reid. Searchlight, Nev., is supposed to be beautiful this time of year.
