Gov. Rick Scott added his voice Tuesday to Florida Republicans calling on fellow Republican U.S. Rep. Trey Radel to resign from Congress over a cocaine conviction.
At the ground-breaking for new Hertz facility in Estero, Scott told reporters he agreed with Republican Party of Florida Chairman Lenny Curry, who issued a statement Monday night calling for Radel to step down.
“I agree with the party chairman,” Scott said, according to the News-Press of Fort Myers.
“Trey is going through a tough time. My prayers and my wife’s prayers are with his family. But we have to hold all of our elected officials to the highest standards.”
In his statement, Curry said a Radel resignation would be best for all Radel and his constituents.
“The people of Florida’s 19th Congressional District need a congressman who is 100 percent focused on the needs of Southwest Florida,” Curry said. “Therefore, Congressman Radel should step down and focus his attention on rehabilitation and his family.”
In addition to Curry’s statements, top Republicans in Collier and Lee counties issued statements Monday night saying Radel had “violated the trust of those whom he was elected to represent and fall short of the standards for an elected official; especially a member of the United States Congress,” the statement said, according to the Naples Daily News.
“His actions clearly disqualify the pursuit of another term and if he should run for re-election, he would not enjoy our support.”
Radel has been in a drug-treatment facility in Naples since being sentenced Wednesday to one year probation and fined $250 after pleading guilty to cocaine possession. He was arrested police sting Oct. 29.
