Vice President Joe Biden surprised customers in Washington on Thursday when he showed up at the grand opening of Capriotti’s, a Delaware-based sandwich shop.
Telling no one in particular that he was having lunch with President Obama, Biden surprised them even further when he couldn’t scrape up enough cash to pay the $56.25 bill, having to turn to an assistant to borrow the difference, The Associate Press reported.
As might be expected, one of the sandwiches was offered on the house, but Biden would have none of it.
“No, no, no, I’m not taking it,” Biden insisted, adding that he’s had to pay every time he’s visited the restaurant for the last 40 years. “In Delaware, you pay. It’s simple.”
Biden boasted that the sandwiches originate from Wilmington’s Union Street — “where I hang out,” according to the report.
Of course, the last time Biden talked about hanging out on Union Street was in the 2008 debate with former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, when he made reference to people at Katie’s Diner struggling under Bush administration policies. It was later discovered that the restaurant had closed some 15 years earlier.
The vice president is not a very wealthy man by Washington standards. ABC News reported earlier this year that he and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, reported an adjusted gross income of $379,035 in 2011, and the Center for Responsive Politics estimated his net worth that year to be about $337,000.
Nonetheless, with a yearly salary of $230,700, one might expect that he could cover a $56 tab.
