The revelation that unemployment figures were falsified to benefit President Obama just before his re-election set off a firestorm in the media, the White House press room and on Capitol Hill.
The House Oversight Subcommittee chairman overseeing the Census Bureau that falsified the surveys, which led to the bogus unemployment figures, promised to fully investigate the matter, according to The Hill.
“The allegation that data gathered by the Census Bureau is being manipulated for any reason is extremely serious. The Oversight Committee has jurisdiction over the Census Bureau and will be thoroughly investigating these claims,” Chairman Blake Farenthold, R-Texas, said in a statement.
A Census Bureau spokesman told The Hill that although the agency takes allegations involving fraud “very seriously,” it has “no reason to believe that there was a systematic manipulation of the data described in media reports.”
When ABC News’ Jonathan Karl raised the issue at Tuesday’s White House press briefing, press secretary Jay Carney dismissed it as a conspiracy theory.
“That story is obviously misleading,” Carney said. “I think a lot of people shed a lot of credibility engaging in conspiracy theories last fall about, you know, rigged jobs numbers.”

The news validated CNBC Business editor Rick Santelli, who was among the first to notice something screwy about the numbers when they came out last year.
Often credited with fathering the tea party movement, the ever-vocal Santelli is famous for his passionate and opinion-filled rants. This one was no different, when on Tuesday he asked, “If we knew now we knew then what we know now, would the outcome have changed?”
Although Santelli began by noting, “I’m calm now,” it proves to be the calm before the storm. Watch the video from CNBC.
