President Obama is skipping out on the 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s Gettysburg address not to help hurricane victims in the Philippines, tornado victims in Illinois or even to do what he promised — “to keep on working as hard as [he] can” to fix the Affordable Care Act.
Nope, in fact, he doesn’t even have a reason. On Tuesday, when the nation will mark such a momentous day in history, the president is scheduled to meet privately with Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel and then later with editors at the Wall Street Journal, but that’s it.
The White House website schedule indicates that the president has “no public schedule.”
Even before he was elected, President Obama has encouraged and even promoted comparisons to Lincoln.
Obama’s adopted state is Illinois, “the land of Lincoln.”
Obama is black; Lincoln emancipated the slaves.
Obama recreated Lincoln’s first inaugural train ride from Springfield, Ill., to Washington, D.C., for his own first inauguration.
Obama placed a hand on Lincoln’s Bible when taking the oath of office — twice.
Considering all that, the president should have jumped at the chance to take part in the 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s iconic speech — especially given his oratorical skills.
Let’s face it, love him or hate him, he wowed the crowd at the 2004 Democratic National Convention when he was but a lowly junior state senator. Then again, Lincoln’s famous address was only 272 words long. It’s hard to imagine Obama answering a reporter’s question in 272 words, let alone deliver a major speech that short.
I suppose we should have expected something like this. After all, he’s the guy who wants us to celebrate Christmas by promoting Obamacare.
All things considered, it’s probably better that the president stay away from Gettysburg.
