A political newcomer with the backing of the popular “Duck Dynasty” TV family was elected to Congress on Saturday.
Vance McAllister upset state Sen. Neil Riser by winning a runoff election for the 5th Congressional District seat located in northern and central Louisiana, Fox News reported.
The election was an all-GOP runoff to replace Rep. Rodney Alexander, who resigned in September to take a Cabinet position in Gov. Bobby Jindal’s administration.

Riser was seen as both the establishment candidate and tea party favorite, having been endorsed by the Tea Party of Louisiana and FreedomWorks, the D.C. based political action group aligned with the tea party, according to Fox News.
McAllister was the outsider, and had the endorsement of his close friend Phil Robertson, the patriarch of television’s hit series “Duck Dynasty.” He ran as the more measured pragmatist, criticizing the gridlock and hyper-partisanship that defines Washington, D.C.
Fox News added that when Robertson endorsed his friend, he explained that McAllister has “the least political experience.”
The video here shows a quick ad cut by Willie Robertson on behalf of his “good buddy” McAllister:
McAllister, who spent more than $800,000 of his own money, told The Advocate that he’s never visited Washington, D.C., but is excited about his first trip.
“I’m looking so forward to it,” he said. “A lot of great leaders and great patriots have walked through there.”
Just think of the possibilities Robertson’s endorsement opens up, where the top reality TV stars of the day help shape political races. What better way to reach the plurality of low information voters in America?
The question is: How soon before reality shows like Duck Dynasty start running political disclaimers at the end of every show?
