Amtrak launches MyBlackRide.com; courts black, Hispanic, gay riders

What’s next, “colored only” cars?

Amtrak, the subsidized money pit that wastes $72 million in taxpayer dollars a year ferrying Northeast congressmen and senators to the nation’s capital to vote on wasting more taxpayer dollars, has launched a marketing campaign targeting black, Hispanic and gay passengers, according to CNS News.

railroadseg1117Amtrak has created three specialty websites, MyBlackJourney.com, DescubreNotreAmerica.com and AmtrakRideWithPride.com, CNS News reported.

It gets tiresome, but imagine for a second any business funded almost entirely with taxpayer dollars – or any private business for that matter – openly courting straight white men with websites like MyWhiteJourney.com, DiscoverWhiteAmerica.com or RideWithWhitePride.com.

It staggers the imagination.

But that doesn’t stop this boondoggle of a federal transportation system from trying to lure more riders who aren’t straight, non-Hispanic whites.

Good luck with that. The hideously expensive train fare – in the range of $160 for a one-way ticket from New York City to Washington, D.C. – is not for the budget-minded.

So it could only have been a burst of marketing genius worthy of an incompetent on the public payroll who decided to tap into the previously overlooked mass market of urban blacks and Hispanics with loads of disposable income and the time and inclination to spend it on a train.

Amtrak didn’t respond to CNS’s requests for information about how much money the campaign is costing the railroad, whose losses over the years include nearly $1 billion in its food-service operations alone, according to Fox News.

When the Supreme Court issued the Brown v. Board of Education ruling in 1954, the “separate but equal” decision it overturned had nothing to do with public schools. Plessy v. Ferguson was about segregated railroad cars in Louisiana.

So, almost 60 years after the U.S. Supreme Court outlawed state-sanctioned segregation in the United States in a case that focused on segregated railroads, Amtrak – a virtual arm of the federal government — has no qualms about fostering segregation anew with a website called MyBlackJourney.com.

In the age of Obama and Eric Holder, Amtrak probably doesn’t expect anyone else to have a problem with it, either.

Heck of a way to run a railroad.
