Who does U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz back, Bill Clinton or Barack Obama?
That’s what Republicans are asking the Florida congresswoman and Democratic National Committee chairwoman after the Clinton issued a statement this week calling for the federal government to honor a commitment President Obama made three dozen times while trying to sell Obamacare to the country: that Americans could keep health-care plans they were happy with.
And the “administrative fix” the president offered on Thursday does little to change the question.
Wasserman Schultz’s office did not respond to a request for comment from BizPac Review on Thursday, but on Tuesday, former President Bill Clinton said the president hasn’t kept his word.
“I personally believe, even if it takes a change in the law, that the president should honor the commitment the federal government made to those people and let them keep what they’ve got,” Clinton said, according to USA Today.
Democrats might argue that Obama’s statement on Thursday showed the law itself doesn’t have to be changed, only its administration, Republicans like Florida Gov. Rick Scott said that amounts to “kicking the can down the road” for families losing their insurance.
Demonstrating again her truly remarkable ability to stay focused on pressing a message despite facts evident to everyone around her – in this case, that the Obamacare rollout has been a disaster for Obama and Democrats in Congress who aren’t fortunate enough to live in her district – Wasserman Schultz on Thursday repeated her mantra that Obamacare will be a win for her party next November.
“You’re darn right that our candidates are going to run on the advantage that Obamacare will be,” Wasserman Schultz said on CNN, before Obama announced his proposal. “The choice will be very clear.”
In a statement released Wednesday, National Republican Congressional Committee Communications Director Andrea Bozek said Wasserman Schultz has been “part of the problem” of Obamacare since then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., forced it through Congress in 2009 and 2010.
During the fight in Congress, Obama vowed repeatedly that anyone who liked their health insurance could keep their health insurance, “period.” With that promise empty and hundreds of thousands of Americans losing their health insurance because of Obamacare, including at least 300,000 policies canceled in Florida alone, Republicans are turning up the heat.
“While Florida families are losing their healthcare coverage Wasserman Schultz remains silent and refuses to acknowledge her responsibility in this Obamacare mess,” Bozek said in the statement.
