Kelly vs. stammering Carville: Don’t spin it, James, why did he do it?

Sparks fly every time the abrasive former Bill Clinton campaign manager James Carville comes in contact with feisty Fox News host Megyn Kelly. Tuesday night was no exception, and Kelly’s intense questioning left Carville stammering as he tried to answer.

They started out on the wrong foot when Carville ignored Kelly’s question as to whether the Clintons were trying to distance themselves from President Obama and his signature health insurance exchange in preparation for a 2016 run. Instead, he began reciting the administration’s Obamacare talking points.

After she pulled him back on track, he closed by returning to the White House mantra that only about five percent of the people would have their coverage cancelled because of the Affordable Care Act.

“It doesn’t apply to very few people,” Kelly shot back. “The latest numbers are that five million people have lost their insurance thus far.”

When Carville insisted that “People lose their insurance all the time,” Kelly insisted that it wasn’t a mere coincidence that it was happening now, and reminded him it will only get worse when the employer mandate kicks in.

“When you do that, you’re undermining the position of your party,” she added. “You’re diminishing the real loss that people are feeling.”

Kelly looked on in disbelief as Carville tried to weasel himself through Kelly’s intense cross-examination.

She eventually reminded him of George H.W. Bush’s “Read my lips, no new taxes” broken promise that Carville exploited to get Clinton elected, and wondered if the same loss of trust wasn’t occurring right now.

“A broken promise can be the difference between election and non-election for the party,” she said. “How much damage has Barack Obama done to your party on what was clearly an unkept promise?”

Carville said it was the GOP that was in free fall.
