Bill Clinton says Obama should honor healthcare promise, change law

Former President Bill Clinton suggested President Obama should keep the Obamacare promise he repeated time and again since 2009 that Americans can keep their preferred health plans.

“For young people who are in the individual market whose incomes are above 400 percent of the poverty level, they were the ones who heard the promise, ‘If you like what you got, you can keep it,’” Clinton told Carlos Watson Tuesday on

“I personally believe, even if it takes a change in the law, the president should honor the commitment the federal government made to those people and let them keep what they got,” Clinton said.

Since Obamacare’s Oct. 1 rollout, millions of Americans have received cancellation notices from their health insurance providers, while mere thousands have purchased insurance on the exchange.

Clinton’s statement places Obama squarely on the horns of a dilemma.

If the president keeps his promise, the Affordable Care Act would end up grossly underfunded and die of its own weight. It requires a large percentage of young, healthy policyholders to pay a premium for insurance to help finance plans for the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions.

If, on the other hand, the administration proceeds as it has, it perpetuates the image that the president misled the American public.

But at this late stage, the policies are cancelled — the shaving cream is already out of the can. I can’t image how the administration can cram it all back in without making an even bigger mess.
