The Bible says man shall not live by bread alone, but Maricopa County, Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio has different ideas.
As part of an effort to show support for the American flag in his jails, Arpaio is placing a sticker of the flag in each cell and threatening inmates who deface it with a restricted diet of bread and water, according to the local CBS affiliate.
“Ten inmates are currently on bread and water for this infraction,” Arpaio told CBS5
The report further stated:
In keeping with the patriotic theme, Arpaio has ordered that the playing of God Bless America and the National Anthem be done daily in every jail facility over the public address system and for all the inmates, regardless of national origin, to hear and sing-a-long.
Earlier this year, Arpaio announced he would start charging inmates $1 per meal and he is looking at switching all inmates to a vegetarian diet as a cost saving measure. His jails began serving bologna sandwiches long ago for the same reason.

Known as “America’s Toughest Sheriff,” Arpaio has been targeted by Attorney General Eric Holder’s Justice Department over trumped up charges of racial profiling, a result of Maricopa County enforcing immigration laws.
Arpaio first got the attention of the country when he began housing inmates in tents, and issuing pink underwear.
When temperatures soared in 2003, he was unsympathetic to human rights complaints: “It’s 120 degrees in Iraq and the soldiers are living in tents, have to wear full body armor, and they didn’t commit any crimes, so shut your mouths.”
As for the condition of his jails, Arpaio will quickly tell critics that if they don’t like it, “I would highly recommend they don’t come to jail.” An attitude that resonates with voters, as he has been reelected six times.
